Restoration and enhancement of a kahikatea forest remnant on public land at Waharoa and its re-connection to several other smaller forest fragments on private land

Kaupapa | Our Purpose

  • The project aims to improve the health and increase the size of the forest, involving the local community, adjoining landowners, and Council (Matamata Piako District Council).

How We Did It

  • Weed control of invasive species (Ivy, Privet, Fan Palm)

  • Rubbish removal

  • Planting of native species (understory planting and buffer edges)

  • Landowner engagement 

  • Volunteer co-ordination

  • Covenant extension on private land, fencing, native planting and weed control

  • Pest control

Outcomes

  • Reduction in weed and pest numbers

  • Increase of native plants through both planting and natural regeneration

  • Increase in size and connectivity of remnant forest and increase of habitat

  • Increase in the diversity of plant species

  • Valuable seed source for eco-sourced seeds for other projects
