Overnight Stay

A serviced 26-bunk hut popular with families. Accessed by several tracks including the Waitawheta Tramway Track - follow an old tramline (1898 - 1928) through the spectacular Waitawheta Gorge, it's a great option for kids.

Swimming Holes & Kauri Trees

This track features mature tawa/podocarp forest with many fern species in the understorey, a stream with swimming holes and three impressive kauri trees that are growing near their southern limit.

Te Waihou Walkway

This picturesque 4.7km walk follows the crystal-clear Waihou River through rolling farmland and native scenery, leading to the famous Blue Spring.

360 Degree Views

A steep walk to the top of Mt Te Aroha, with spectacular views over the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Of the several tracks on Mt Te Aroha, this track is the most direct route to the summit.

Head for the Hills

A loop track follows through the bush and up to the summit, with a lookout tower and great views across to the Kaimai Ranges and Firth of Thames.

River Falls & Cascades

​Wairere Falls Track weaves its way through moss covered rocks and tree roots. Large round boulders form natural pools and cascading waterfalls.

Discover Firth of Thames

​A wetland of international significance. The site includes shallow estuarine water and mudflats, shell banks, grass flats, mangrove forest, saltmarsh and limited freshwater swamp margins.

Insights

Watch from bird hides as thousands of shorebirds swirl in flocks over the beautiful coast and visit the centre to learn more about their fascinating world. This is a hidden and peaceful gem for birders, locals and international guests.

Mining & Railway History

Situated at the base of the Coromandel Range, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, giving access to impressive remains from the mining and railway eras.
