Morrinsville River Walk

Gully habitat restoration along the Morrinsville Riverwalk pathway beside the Waitakaruru and Piako Rivers in Morrinsville.

Our location

Studholme Street, Morrinsville.

Kaupapa | Our Purpose

  • To create an ecological and recreational showcase for residents and visitors.

Along with significant volunteer input and community engagement, this project has been supported by Matamata-Piako District Council, Waikato Ecological Restoration Trust (Tamahere Nursery), Awarua Trust, and Transpower Community Care Fund.

How We Did It

  • Weed control (volunteers and paid contractors)

  • Site preparation, rubbish removal and native understory plantings 

  • Volunteer co-ordination

  • Community and school events

  • Fund raising

Outcomes

  • Several successful plantings since 2022. In 2024/25 we planted nearly 800 native plants at 3 locations.

  • Involvement of local volunteers and schools in planting and weeding events.

  • Improvements to biodiversity and habitats and stabilisation of river banks.

  • Improvement to aesthetics along the river walk.

  • Ongoing opportunities to engage in meaningful conservation efforts with community organisations, volunteers and adjoining property owners.

What's Next

  • Regular co-ordination of volunteer monthly weeding events

  • Extend volunteer effort from Morrinsville Community

  • Extend weed control across Studholme St to remove privet

  • Assess options for pest control

  • Investigate opportunities for future events
