Kaupapa | Our Purpose
Wetland native forest restoration reflecting the original forests of Piako and Hauraki Plains. Eco-sourced native species including the iconic canopy trees Kahikatea, Pukatea and Totara.
The land is public land owned by Matamata Piako District Council (MPDC) and administered by the Tahuna Golf Club.
How We Did It

This project is a partnership with Tahuna Golf Club, Forest Flora Nursery, and Piako Waihou Catchment Trust. Supported by funding from MPDC

Golf club members provided significant volunteer input

We have planted a diverse range of native species that reflect the type of forest that used to grow here and across the Hauraki Plains.

We’ve used larger sized eco-sourced native species planted at wider spacings, including colonising shrubs, understory plants, and canopy trees (Kahikatea, Pukatea, Totara) characteristic of the local area.

The areas planted were wet – and difficult to mow. The golf course has turned a maintenance problem into a nature-based solution with multiple benefits.
Outcomes
Restoring an area with high community use and visibility provides community education and awareness opportunities.
Restoring unproductive (or hard to maintain) land back to native forest or wetland helps to:

Filter out nutrients removing nitrogen and phosphorous

Hold banks and soil together reducing erosion and sediment

Reduce flood risk by absorbing excess water

Provide habitat and boost biodiversity

Increase shade and shelter for stock health

Meet current and future regulatory requirements
What's Next
Ongoing maintenance of plants - releasing of plants from weeds, and further planting of native species planned.
Creation of signage to raise awareness and support other landowners to take action.
